About the Role

The Senior Database Administrator is a member of the Database Administration team within IT Services. The individual participates in the design, testing, implementation, maintenance, and 24x7 support of the organization's databases across multiple platforms and computing environments; participates in data recovery and data integrity checks; supports the production operations and applications development teams; assists with the installation of other software as needed; and completes required logs and reports of maintenance activities. The individual participates in the development of database management policies and standards; provides in-depth consulting services in the identification and resolution of database issues; and participates in the planning, design, and usage of data resources. The individual is responsible for adhering to Matson's standards and would participate in incorporating industry and security best practices into database administration and management activities. This individual is expected to have a good understanding of Matson's operations procedures and business applications; and be responsible for maintaining documentation and implementing processes that meet the IT general control normative model to ensure SOX compliance. The incumbent is expected to learn the business practices of his or her customers within all business units and implement appropriate database support solutions and processes to meet business requirements.

What you'll do:

  • Work as a general administrator providing support of Production, Pre-Production, QA, Development databases and data warehouses on web, on premise and cloud infrastructures.
  • Responsible for database, data mart, data warehouse, and reporting (canned/ad hoc business intelligence) administration.
  • Work with the Architecture, Development, QA, Production Operations, Information Security, Infrastructure and related teams to implement and support Matson systems.
  • Responsible for database, web and cloud infrastructure installations, configurations, patches and other related activities.
  • Responsible for database backups and restores, monitors, and optimizes the usage of database resources, servers and services.
  • Initiate corrective action to ensure all database services meet processing requirements for performance and reliability.
  • Provides database services support to in-house and remote users.

You have these skills:

  • Full lifecycle development experience.
  • Extensive experience developing in one or more of the following:
    • successful history of acting as Database Administrator on full lifecycle application development and data warehouse projects.
    • data management techniques including logical data modeling, physical database optimization, data distribution, and database performance monitoring.
    • knowledge of Oracle, MySQL and SQL Server Databases, NoSQL in Linux (RHEL), JBoss/OpenJDK/Tomcat and Windows environments.
    • knowledge of Shell Scripting, SQL, file transfer tools in a Linux/Windows environment.
    • knowledge of DB Design tools such as Embarcadero E/R Studio.

And these qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S) from a four-year college or university education or equivalent technical certification is desirable.
  • Eight (8) or more years of related work experience desirable.
  • Proven troubleshooting abilities and experience in applying upgrades/patches on production environments.
  • Experience in rolling out new systems into production as well as upgrading production systems while maintaining availability in an enterprise environment.

Extra credit if you have:

  • Extensive experience developing in one or more of the following is hiring desirable:
    • Knowledge of PostgreSQL and Cloud Database Services such as AWS RDS.
    • Knowledge of open source NoSQL DBs (MongoDB, HBase) or AWS DynamoDB.
    • Knowledge of Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau and Splunk.
    • Knowledge of Data Science Platforms such as Alteryx and Knime.
    • Knowledge of open source Big Data and Data Lake frameworks such as Hadoop, Hive, and Parquet.
    • Knowledge of Python (or comparable) programming language in Automation and Analytics ETL processing.
    • Knowledge of open source ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) Stack (or comparable) utilities.
    • Knowledge of open source Spark (or comparable) Real-Time Streaming Analytics.
    • Knowledge of open source TensorFlow (or comparable) Machine Learning Platform.
    • Knowledge of serverless computing platforms such as AWS Lambda, AWS Elastic Container Service.
The annual salary range for this position in California is $117,800 - $160,340. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
